In addition to being his 50th film as a hero, the multitalented Dhanush's Raayan, which is currently playing in theaters, marks his second film as a director. He has picked a sinister tale about a family coming together in the middle of North Chennai's dark underworld. Kathavarayan (Dhanush), Muthuvel Rayan (Sandeep Kishan), and Manikavel Rayan (Kalidas Jayaram) are three brothers who live in Chennai with their only sister Durga (Dushara Vijayan). It remains to be seen whether the film will have an impact on all segments of the audience in addition to Dhanush fans. Their business is a street food restaurant. Kathavarayan is overly attached to his younger sister, and when he was a teenager, he even killed a guardian who was trying to sell her. The feared gangster Durai (Saravanan) and his fierce rival Sethu (SJ Surya), who is waiting for an opportunity to exact revenge for his father's death, rule the region. In the meantime, Prakash Raj, the new Police Commissioner, is planning to conflict with them and destroy them all. Because of Muthuvel, a gang war breaks out, and Raayan, normally calm, is forced to take on the role of a killing machine to protect his family. The rest of Raayan's screenplay is all about whether he succeeds or fails, as well as the betrayals and difficulties he faces.
Dhanush has once again given a strong performance as the multifaceted character, initially displaying a calm demeanor while being strict with his brothers and loving his sister. During this time, the audience erupts in applause for his remarkable transformation into the mass avatar. Dhanush reigns supreme throughout the second half as the unstoppable force that destroys anyone who poses a threat to his family. His style and agility are especially impressive in the action sequences.
Dhanush also merits praise for giving equal importance to all of the characters in the movie, not just his own. As the family's bad apple, Sandeep Kishan dominates the first half, and his romance scenes with Aparna Balamurali are entertaining to watch. The meek sister, played by Dushara Vijayan, transforms into a tigress when her older brother is in danger. Selvaraghavan makes an appearance throughout the film as the good samaritan who assists the family. Kalidas Jayaram plays the confused younger brother admirably. Even in a subdued avatar, SJ Suriya's subdued villainy remains menacing. He also makes his wife, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, laugh when she sees him with his second wife. Dhanush and SJ's initial altercation. While their final fight is riveting, Suryah is a delight to watch. Aparna Balamurali has also been seen as Sundeep's love interest. As the cop who has his own agenda, veteran Prakash Raj shines.
The most positive aspect of Raayan is the way Dhanush experiences mixed emotions and how his family bonds despite the violent setting. Brilliant writing keeps the reader interested from the very beginning to the very end. When Dhanush, the dialogue writer, asks Saravanan if he would have spared him in the same circumstance, he reaches his highest point. Dhanush's actions and persona speak loudly throughout, despite his limited speech.
Sundeep and Kalidas' character arcs, on the other hand, lack conviction. There are also a lot of logical mistakes, like Dhanush not knowing what his brother does for a living and the biggest gangs not knowing where Dhanush is, even though he is close to dying. The sluggish pace may present a challenge for some viewers.
The film's greatest asset is AR Rahman's soundtrack and songs. The climax of "Adangaatha Asuran" sends Dhanush fans into a frenzy if "Oh Raaya" causes them to whistle. To top it all off, "Usure Nee Thane" is sufficient to highlight the bond between the siblings to the fullest extent. With his reddish lighting, Om Prakash's cinematography captures the underworld's dark side. G. K. Prasanna has performed exceptionally well. The film was produced on a large budget by Sun Pictures. In his second film as director, Dhanush has won a lot of attention for his sensitive handling of emotions while maintaining the necessary level of violence. He is one of very few Tamil actors whose 50th films have been well received by critics and grossed well at the box office.
The verdict: Go for Dhanush's well-crafted violent gangster story.
